Fondazione Santa Lucia (FSL) is a nationally renowned hospital for neuromotor rehabilitation. Its hospitalization activity dates back to 1960. During the 80s, intense research work on the study of neurological damage was promoted and funded. Italian and foreign scientists, all from universities, participated in this high-level work. Since 1992, FSL holds the status of Scientific Institute for Hospitalisation and Treatment of National Importance (IRCCS) and High-level Specialisation in euromotor Rehabilitation, in recognition of its constant commitment to clinical, research and teaching activities. A modern, high-technology six-storey building, covering a total area of over 30.000 sq. m, hosts more than 2.000 in-out patients per year (suffering from cerebrovascular disorders, neuro-muscular degenerative disorders, brain and spinal cord injury-related disorders). As a scientific institute, the Santa Lucia Foundation carries out intensive research work covering virtually all aspects in the fields of neuromotor and cognitive rehabilitation, from clinical to basic scientific investigations, with an average of more than 100 papers/year on peer-reviewed scientific journals (Impact Factor total score about 957/year). The Laboratory of Neuroelectrical Imaging and Brain Computer Interface is active since 1998 in the development of BCI technology, through participation to projects at international (EC: ABI and MAIA; US-NIH: BCI2000; Italy-China: BCI2) and national (funded by the National Council for Research, the Ministry of Health, the Telethon charity, and other private foundations) level. Currently, the laboratory staff consists of 2 medical doctors, 3 bioengineers, and 2 technicians. 3 PhD students and several graduate and undergraduate students cooperate in the research activity. The key personnel involved in the project include dr. Febo Cincotti and dr. Donatella Mattia FSL as a user partner will be mainly involved in the analysis of requirements and in the definition of the showcases (WP1). Moreover, FSL will contribute in the design of new techniques for users’ interfaces in the particular context of domotics (WP3). FSL will also provide its experience to support the validation of SM4ALL project results (WP7). |
